Camp Rick Review

Choreography camp was a lot of fun this weekend.  It was great to have Rick with us, and he wrote some beautiful work for our weapon lines.  The members worked extremely hard and are probably feeling pretty sore and tired.   Looking forward to Friday, when we will all be together again, for more of the same, plus some back breaking floor painting.  Gotta love it!

Fish Suits

I received a notification two days ago, that a UPS package was being delivered yesterday.  Of course, I assumed that it was the prototypes for our "fish suits", which I was told, would be mailed any day now.

I waited all day long, for the familiar sounds of the big brown truck, to come rambling down the street.  Around 7:00pm, Sara & I stood at the door, with our noses pressed against the windows.   She spotted the UPS dude, down the street, so it was only a matter of time.

When he finally came to a halt in front of the house, he was greeted by the two of us, standing on the front porch, with arms outstretched.  The box was white, and clearly from our source, but it was shaped funny.

We took the box inside and tore into it, only to discover that it was full of the free practice flags that we receive with the purchase of our custom show flags.  Denied.

What a huge let down.  BAH!

Lots o Stuff

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Drew is in Rockford this weekend for Regiment brass auditions.  Sara & Heath are in Pearl, Ms. helping our Amye with her guard's drill and choreography camp.  Good luck to the ladies at Pearl!

I am working on getting ready for Christmakuh by dusting off my boughs of holly.  I love decorating for the holidays, but it usually takes me the entire month of December to get everything out and up.  Then, the day after Christmas, I am ready to shove it all back in the closet.

Safe travels and good luck to all who are going to their respective corps auditions.  Sara will be in Rockford next weekend with Rick and his staff, for Regiment guard auditions.  Good luck to Hannah, Kelly, Malissa, Midori, and Bre!!!

Our next rehearsal weekend begins Friday, December 12th, with Miley Cyrus hype, and we have Saturday and Sunday with Rick, jammed with choreography.   I am looking foward to receiving our uniform prototypes so that we may begin fittings!   They should be here, any day now.

Happy Black Friday to all!  Put on your elbow pads, and get out there among 'em!!

Capella announces its 2009 production....

It is told that a large school of koi fish swam up a river.  But upon reaching the Dragon’s gate, only one koi was able to swim over to the other side. It is also said that the successful koi who swims through the Dragon’s gate, can be transformed into a dragon, in the instant of it’s leap out of the water, thus avoiding evil spirits.

Set to excerpts of soundtracks by Alexandre Desplat and James Newton Howard, Capella will come out of the shadows, and leap into the deep end of the pond, entering the Independent Open class, for the first time, with enthusiasm and determination.

Capella’s returning staff consists of Drew Solomonson, Visual Design, Sara Abramson and Elizabeth Heath, Choreographers, and Emily Abramson, Administrative Director.  We are pleased to announce that Rick Subel will be joining our staff for the 2009 season, bringing his expertise in weapon choreography, to further enhance our talented staff.   Capella will be performing at the Nashville and Indianapolis Power Regionals, as well as World Championships in Dayton, OH.

Rehearsal Weekend

Our first full rehearsal weekend was great!  If my condition is any indication of how the members feel, they are exhausted.

I love this cast and how they interact with each other and the staff.  It is going to be a memorable season.

Thank you to Lauren and Kathleen for bringing us brownies, which were scrumptious!!

Good luck to all who are auditioning for corps in the next couple of weeks.  We will be thinking of you!!  It will be a long three weeks until we are all together again.  Have a great holiday!

Twilight - The Premiere

My night out with the girls, was alot of fun, however I am suffering today from sleep deprivation.  I guess I am too old to burn the midnight oil, so to speak.

The theatre was everything I expected it to be, in light of the recent hub-bub surrounding the movie.  Cars painted, as if rooting for their favorite sports team, girls in bad prom dresses, sitting in line for two hours (thanks for my chair), and even a gal dressed up as Alice's red car...yeah, really.

It was a small stampede when the doors were opened and a mad scramble to find the best seat in the house.  Looking around the theatre, there was a soft glow from the cell phones and cameras which illuminated the room.  I wondered to myself, "Isn't it a school night"?  There were teens and tweens, everywhere.  Screaming, doing the wave, taking pics of each other as if they were in Hollywood, at a real premiere.  It was crazy.

You know what they say?  Opinions are like, well, you know.  My opinion is one of disappointment.   I adored the books and read each one as quickly as I could, so that I could move onto the next.  The movie, however, did not capture the fantasy that my mind created.  There were key elements missing, and if I were watching the movie without having read the book, I would not understand.  The teens and tweens at the theatre laughed nervously at every spoken word, as if they were in on the big secret, that the movie failed to reveal.  It became monotonous and distracting.   What was so funny, I kept thinking to myself.  I think it was more of an, OMG, its Edward, reaction from the young female audience, more than the content of what was happening on the screen.  I was thinking OMG for a completely different reason.

The acting, on the whole, was horrific and made some scenes almost comical, when indeed they were intended to be serious.  The teenaged laugh track in the theatre did not help, in this area.  No Oscar contention for this cast.  I hated the casting of Carlisle and Esme.  I loved the casting of James and Alice...wish they had more lines.  Jacob's character had the worst "weave" I have ever seen. However bad the hair, he is an extremely handsome guy, making Edward "pale" in comparison.

Overall, I am sure that this film will make some bucks, due to the younger fan base.  I hope the sequel(s) is an improvement over this initial offering.    Harry Potter need not worry.

I really WANTED to love this movie.  Oh well.

Inspirational

Have you seen this video on the WGI site?  I just watched it and blubbered like a baby.  I know... The next time you are a little less than enthusiastic about going to practice, think of this beautiful girl.  I am truly inspired.

Twilight!

Going with the girls tonight to see THE movie of the year!  Midnight showing...hope this ole gal can hang.  I guess a power nap is in order for this afternoon.  Cannot wait to see how this book translates to the screen.  Everyone has their own vision of what it should look like.  Me included.  I am not sure about the casting YET, but am open to be pleasantly surprised.

Drill Camp

Drill camp was very productive and we are well on our way to putting our new show, on the floor.  We have alot of work to do between now and January, for Field Day.

Capella was decked out in their finest 80's gear, which made the day so much more fun.

Looking foward to next weekend, when we will all be together again.  We missed Zarah and Kate, who were in Indy for Grand Nationals. Congrats to Andy and Avon High School for your first place victory!!

Hype Day!!

Gotta love the 80's. I finished college, got married, moved to Memphis, started working for the man, and having babies, so I was more about big shoulder pads, big stomach, and big hair.

My favorite memories. Florida State. Sixteen Candles. Leader Federal. The Brat Pack. Oingo Boingo. Duran Duran. Docksiders. IZOD. Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans. Double Wrap Belts. My wedding. My babies. Dusty.
It hurts that the 80's are now considered retro/oldies. I guess I really am an antique.

There is certainly alot going on behind the scenes.  We have drill camp this weekend which will be a great source of new pictures for your viewing pleasure.

We are looking foward to getting this show on the floor and getting our koi on.

Talk with you soon.     Madam

Gearing Up

October has begun and planning for the 2009 winter season is in full swing. Uniforms and flags to design, floor choices, registrations, rehearsal calendars, show dates, website updates, new members, etc. So much to do, but so worth the effort. Our first rehearsal is November 2nd. It seems so far away, and the days seem to drag. Luckily, it is my favorite season with many distractions to keep my mind occupied. Football season, leaves turning, cooler weather, and of course, Halloween. So much to look forward to!!

This gives me GAS!

Nashville Gas Runs Dry as Rumor Spreads

(Sept. 20) - Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy: An estimated three-fourths of gas stations in the Nashville, Tennessee, area ran dry Friday, victim of an apparent rumor that the city was running out of gas.
"Everybody has just gone nuts," said Mike Williams, executive director of the Tennessee Petroleum Council.

He said he has no idea about the origin of a rumor that there was going to be no gas in Nashville. One reporter called him, saying she had heard that Nashville would be without gas within the hour, he said.
Hearing the rumor, drivers rushed to fill their cars and trucks.

I'm in Love

Being a child of Pong, Atari, and Activision, I have always looked forward to the newest game system with great anticipation. Christmas morning was as much fun for me, as it was for my kids, maybe more so.

With the newest installment of Nintendo gadgets and the Wii...I find myself absolutely fascinated with Guitar Hero. What a great way to get your inner rock star on.

Move your rocking chair over, Gene Simmons! This ole gal is rocking too!!

WOW.

The San Antonio show was AWESOME! I am nearly blind from putting my face up against the computer screen, looking for familiar faces. The shows were spectacular!

Here are some of the highlights for me:

Troopers: I saw Hannah, up close and personal, spinning sabre and rifle. Go Hannah!! Yay for face time.

Colts: I spent all my time looking for Coop, who ALWAYS gets the most coverage, but I could not find her. That's okay, I will find LOTS of pics of her. The cameramen LOVE her, as do we all.

Blue Stars: Really fun show. The guard is so much better than expected. Go Michael Shapiro.

Bluecoats: Ahhh. So much added to the show and much improved since the last time I saw it. I loved the addition of the actual "actor" on the field as the announcer. Nice touch. I saw Sara running by a couple of times, but not for very long. She said that they run ALOT. I thought they showed Jana's face up close at the end of the show, but Larry said, "That's NOT Jana!". The Boxer is spectacular and gives me chills. AND...passing SCV? Yay.

SCV: Ridiculous drill in the opener. Loved it.

Cadets: Face time for Chris Watson! Go Bass 3. They play and march very well, but the talking distracted me. Their guard spins flags that look like MONEY. That would buy my happiness.

Carolina Crown: Great music selections. LOUD brass. Outstanding guard. Very fun show with lots of really great musical moments that are IN YOUR FACE. Crowd's favorite show.

Blue Devils: Absurd? Yes. Winner? Yes. Guard? Best on the field.

Cavaliers: Samurai...ahh. They added two Shoguns, battling it out in the Opener. It was WONDERFUL. I adore this show. Michael Gaines and his drill never disappoint.

Phantom Regiment: Beautiful. Like watching an opera. The brass is amazing! The slitting of the guard girl's throat is genius. Love the goosestep and the army members breaking ranks to pay homage to Spartacus. Saw Midori wiz by the camera...never saw Emily. I am waiting for the classic PR ending. Hope they add it. Hey Drew, do it for me!!!

Cannot wait until Friday. I am going to pick up my sister in Alabama and we are heading to the 'Boro to see the shows, my kids, and SARA! Woo Hoo!!

San Antonio Day

I have been sitting in front of the computer since Noon today, watching the DCI San Antonio show LIVE on the Fan Network. There will be a short break and then...MORE corps tonight!!

Yay!

Stuck in Memphis

We had big plans to attend the San Antonio show this weekend, but with my Dad being ill, and all that is going on, we were unable to get there.

Oh well...I have the LIVE Fan Network broadcast to look forward to. You get to pick what type of view you have. I like multi-camera in hopes of seeing some faces!

Good luck to all my kids in Texas! Go gettum!

Happy Birthday Old Lady

Induldge in some bad habits and party like nun other on your birthday. Best card ever. I am now one year away from being an antique. How depressing is that?

Capella Camp

We had a great time this past Saturday with our girls from Bartlett and Houston! What a delight they are. Hope to see everyone in August for our next camp....it will be the last and BIGGEST! All of the members will be back from tour and all of our instructors, as well. Shout out to Elizabeth for a job well done on the camp instruction!!! I am sure she is lonely, just like I am, and ready for everyone to get home again! The August camp is a great way to get a preview of what Capella auditions will be like in September. More details to come.
